TESTIMONIES

One of the biggest challenges which women in management face are mental health issues. I was diagnosed with a mental disorder known as bipolar, the disorder associated with episodes of mood swings, high energy, reduce need for sleep, and loss of touch with reality. It is very important for women in management to be aware of these challenges and manage their stress. Symptoms such as anger, shouting, isolation, loss of interest can be issues that need to be addressed by medical professionals.

News & Campaigns

“My name is Halima Mohamed Hirsi a mother of a four-year-old son. I am currently unemployed. In your post on Instagram dated 22nd October 2019, you gave a chance to two winners who will tell you their steps to grow their carrier into senior management level.

I am currently unemployed but I was employed once and in 5 years that I was working with CRDB Bank Plc I had a plan and the time I left I had a carrier growth as Account Manager II attached at retail banking department as Coastal Zone Retail Manager handling 13 branches. I do not want to hold a spot for a more deserving winner but my story is worth sharing.

In 2010 after my final year exams I was attached at CRDB Bank PLC in the Marketing department as a part-time employee and in October 2010 after interviews, I got a permanent job which lasted for two years where I was head of premier services at a branch level attached at Azikiwe premier branch. and then I got a three-year contract which lasted till December 2015.

I came across your page on Instagram and I was hooked. Gender should not be a factor in whether or not a person can be a great leader. These women know how to value work-life balance, they are empathetic and they are good at multitasking. Women make great leaders because the odds are against them leading. It takes an extra push to get to the top. That is why the women who emerge on top are extraordinarily strong and capable. They had to fight to get there. So the initiative you took of calling attention to a group of women who have gone above and beyond in their careers needs to be applauded and I will be very happy to be part of it.

I admired every single woman who was posted and their achievement. I see myself in them if only my dream of climbing a corporate ladder was not cut short four years ago in March 2015 when I was admitted at Muhimbili psychiatric ward diagnosed with Postpartum psychosis an illness affecting 1 in every 1000 first-time mothers.

Being sick I could not work for 7 months and when I went back to work, the human resource department gave me a letter of ending my contract reason being that they wanted me to recover and once I feel better I can join them. CRDB Bank PLC was so good to me all that time I was out of work I still got my full salary and I also understood their reason because while I was pregnant I was going through severe depression hence my attendance was not that good and I never wanted to lie and provide fake sick sheets because no one knew what was wrong with me. I remember I used to cry all the way to work and once I reach there it only took a few hours before I faint in front of my co-workers. I was shattered, how is something as beautiful as having a baby become a reason for ending my carrier. For two years I kept looking for other jobs and could not find one. In 2017 I ended up coming with the idea of opening a juice business, which too sent me back to the Psychiatric ward, this time I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder because there are times when I have manic episodes and at times am depressed. I asked for a diary when I started feeling a bit better and decided to document everything I wanted to become while still in the hospital. After being discharged I decided to put my efforts into learning about maternal mental health and mental health in the workplace. I know a lot of women are going through depression trying to balance their lives and a few are lucky to even get medical help.”
